Collier falls to tragic death
Posted on December 16th 2009
Mining is deemed as one of the country's most dangerous occupations. There are numerous opportunities for fatal accidents if a strict set of protocols are not followed. Tragically, a collier from Bradford fell down a mine shaft in the early evening on Monday 14 December.
The collier who was pronounced dead at the scene after the South Yorkshire Police and specialist mine rescuers rushed to aid the victim. A spokesman for the police service said that an investigation and post-mortem were underway.
The Health and Safety Executive remarked that mines like the Maltby Mine in Rotherman can be "hazardous environments" posing a risk to a "large number of people" not just from the dangers of falling from height but also in the nature of the industry's daily activities and "flood, fire and explosions" are a real threat to colliers every day.
Although there has been a remarkable improvement in mine management since the beginning of the 20th century, the HSE stressed that there was still a need for careful and thorough colliery management in order to prevent further loss of lives.
