Greater Manchester comes under HSE scrutiny
Posted on March 19th 2010
Greater Manchester has recently come under speculation from the Health and Safety Executive after inspections carried out revealed that more that 25% of construction sites failed safety inspections. A total of 163 sites where visited and in total 42 were found to be breaching health and safety regulations with 53 enforcement notices issued.
The HSE found that just under half of the breaches where from a failure to ensure the safety of employees whilst working from a height.
The HSE's principle inspector for the Greater Manchester area, Polly Tomlinson said: "The majority of the construction sites our inspectors visited had good health and safety procedures in place. But the other 42 sites are letting the rest of the industry down and putting workers' lives at risk. Hundreds of construction workers are seriously injured every year because companies don't treat the safety of their employees as a priority. We will continue to make unannounced visits to sites, and take enforcement action when necessary, until the message gets across. It simply isn't worth taking risks to try and save money."
