Indiana absent in rolling polythene accident

Posted on August 05th 2009

The boulder-dash sequence of Indiana Jones fame has become an iconic image of cartoons, computer games and media alike, often the heavy rolling object providing the comical feat of which to escape.

However, Nicola Upsher's own 'boulder-dash' moment didn't result in Harrison Ford swooping the pair to safety, in fact the rather predictable consequences of her crushed leg only adds insult to injury.

An employee of Kimberley Clarks Gravesend factory, Upsher was supposed to be transporting large polythene reels when one rolled of the inadequately sized trolley, crushing her leg.

The task carried out on a daily basis was an accident waiting to happen as the trolley supplied by her employers was not of a suitable size and rolls had to be precariously balanced across the trolley's forks.

Kimberley Clarks employers liability insurance could have been saved the consequences of the crushing blow by carrying out a simple risk assessment, which would have identified the need to have small wedges incorporated into the design of the trolley to stop the 'boulder-rolling' moment.

Upsher suffered crushing injuries to her calf muscles and had to take 6 months of work, however in recompense she was award £14, 500 in compensation.
